Student Activities - School of Medicine

Each of the four classes elects officers for the academic year, and activities are planned by the students with advice and counsel from the faculty. The Student Executive Council, composed of elected representatives from each of the classes of the  School of Medicine in Shreveport, and the School of Graduate Studies, functions as the main legislative and administrative body for all Medical School and all Graduate School students.

Students are encouraged to organize social activities, counseling services, and voluntary educational and cultural projects to be carried out by the students themselves. The Office of Student Affairs is administratively responsible for assisting and advising the students in their activities.

Alpha Omega Alpha is the national honor medical society. Students are selected on the basis of their academic performance and usually must be in the top sixteen percent of their class in order to be elected.

Alpha Omega Alpha was founded nationally in 1902, at the University of Illinois, and the Chapter at the School of Medicine in Shreveport was established in 1973. The society’s major goal is to stimulate academic excellence, and the local Chapter has been instrumental in bringing outstanding physicians from around the nation to Shreveport as lecturers and visiting professors.
