OBJECTIVES AND/OR GOALS
For the student to reinforce and improve the skills and knowledge gained during the junior rotation in pediatrics through supervised direct contact with infants, children and adolescents in an outpatient clinic setting.
SPECIFIC DUTIES OF SENIOR STUDENTS
• Improve knowledge about the processes of growth and development.
• Improve the understanding of normal growth and development
• Improve understanding of the need for screening and provision of preventative medical care to pediatric patients
• Improve knowledge about commonly occurring and major acute and chronic pediatric conditions.
• Improve ability to perform age appropriate history and physical examination and learn how to complete as directed history and physical examination based on the chief complaint and physical findings
• Strengthen clinical assessment and evaluation skills, interviewing skills and examination skills
• Improve understanding of the effects of social, cultural, and societal problems and issues on health and the impact of illness on the child, the child’s family and the community in which the family resides.
• Improve clinical assessment and ability to develop a diagnostic and therapeutic plan, conserving resources and using the laboratory and other diagnostic services effectively
• Improve understanding of results of laboratory and other diagnostic procedures
• Improve knowledge of documentation requirements
• Improve knowledge of medications prescribed for common acute and chronic pediatric conditions and prescription writing skills
• Learn the principles of office management and medical economics
• Reinforce importance of developing life-long self-directed learning skills
