The Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic is located on the second floor in the Ambulatory Care Building, northwest corner of Linwood and Kings Highway. You will report to the clinic at 8:00 weekday mornings and 1:00 weekday afternoons. Please present yourself to the attending when you arrive and remain for the full half-day. Lunch is usually from 12:00 to 1:00.
Primary Goals of Selective:
1. Perform a competent history, physical and mental status exam in psychiatric outpatients
2. Determine the interrelationships between psychiatric and other medical illness and how each may affect the other
3. Identify the commonly used psychotropic drugs (neuroleptics, antidepressants, anti-anxiety agents, and anti- manic agents), commonly used indications for the drugs, as well as frequently used dosage and side effects
4. Initiate the management of psychiatric patients for commonly seen problems in primary care
5. Follow patients with psychiatric problems
6. Distinguish which psychiatric problems may require immediate hospitalization
7. Perform brief forms of psychotherapy applicable to a general medical setting
8. Develop skills for lifelong learning.
Specific Objectives:
1. Students will participate in initial (new patient) and followup clinic visits under resident and faculty supervision.
2. Students will improve medical and psychiatric history taking skills, physical exam, and mental status exam skills
3. Students will learn to adapt the history, physical exam, and mental status exam to what is needed for different patients.
4. General medical and psychiatric knowledge and disease-specific information for common and major medical and psychiatric problems treated in the outpatient setting will be gained through conferences, seminars, and self-directed learning modalities.
5. Students will learn about aspects of preventative medical and psychiatric care.
6. Students will learn documentation requirements.
7. Student will have exposure to the effects of social, cultural, and societal problems and issues on mental health.
No more than 3 days during the 4 week rotation can be taken for interviews unless approved in advanced by director. Any absences in excess of 3 days will be required to be made up before the evaluation will be completed and turned in.
Resources for Learning:
The student will interview and participate in the treatment of at least one new patient daily, and see at least 3 follow- ups daily. The student will follow a minimum of 3 patients weekly during the course of the selective. The majority of patients will be adult, however, the student will follow at least 1 child/adolescent patient during the rotation.
The student will have individual supervision weekly with the clinic psychiatrist to focus on common management problems. Faculty will observe at least one patient interview during the rotation.
