Primary Goals of Selective:
1. Students will provide primary contact with patients on initial (new patients) and follow-up (established patients) Urology
Clinic visits under Urology resident and/or faculty supervision.
2. History and physical examination skills will be improved.
3. Students will learn to adapt the extent of history and physical examination performed to what is needed to different patients.
4. General medical knowledge and disease-specific information for common and major medical problems treated in the outpatient setting will be gained through conferences, seminars / topic reviews, and self-directed learning modalities.
5. Students will learn about aspects of preventative medical care.
6. Learn documentation requirements.
7. Exposure to effects of social, cultural, and societal problems and issues on health.
Specific Objectives:
1. Acquire extended knowledge and experiences in ambulatory Urology by participating in the evaluation and management of outpatients in the Urology Clinic, under the direct supervision of Urology residents and attending physicians.
2. Gain experience in the fundamental principles and skills learned during the 3rd year Mini-block rotation on Urology.
3. Enhance clinical skills of urologic history taking, focused GU examination, and evaluation / management of patients with various urologic symptoms and disease in an ambulatory setting.
4. Actively participate in the daily Urology Outpatient Clinic, initially seeing 10-12 patients each day to review their chief complaints and their present, past, family, and social histories.
5. Perform the initial physical exams and review any pertinent laboratory or imaging studies, before discussing the patients with supervising Urology house staff and attendings. Under the guidance and supervision of Urology residents and attendings, the students will actively participate in the development of differential diagnoses and management plans on these outpatients.

Evaluation:
Consensus evaluation of the students’ performance by resident and attending supervisors will include assessment of the students’ ability to illicit an appropriate GU history, to perform an accurate and appropriate physical exam,
To interpret results of diagnostic studies, to formulate a reasonable differential diagnosis, and to develop a management plan. The student’s communication, interpersonal, procedural and professional skills (e.g., punctual attendance, initiative, maturity) will also be assessed by direct observation and interactions between students, their patients, and supervising residents and attending. A final evaluation will be completed at the end of the selective.
