ELECT EMEDI - Interventional Nephrology
Duration: 4 weeks Location: Academic Medical Center of Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Maximum Number of Students: 2 Elective Offered During Blocks: All 4 credits
This course is designed to provide senior medical students a comprehensive experience and understanding in caring for and managing patients encountered in interventional nephrology. This course consists of a four-week sequence of curricular activities focusing on medical knowledge and clinical skills in interventional nephrology. Vascular dialysis access is considered both the “lifeline” and the “Achilles heel” for patients undergoing dialysis. Complications related to mechanical and infectious issues with dialysis access can have a negative impact on patient outcomes. End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) costs Medicare around $40 billion, which is almost 8% of the total expenditure for only 1% of its ESRD beneficiaries. Goals: The purpose of this elective is for fourth-year medical students to build a comprehensive understanding of the different types of dialysis vascular access and the various pathologies associated with them by providing a well-structured and closely monitored practical experience in vascular interventional nephrology. This includes getting familiar with all the different vascular and interventional procedures, identifying, and handling potential complications, providing suitable peri-procedure care, and supporting the long-term management that is integrated with the clinical management of referring physicians.
Objectives: Upon completion of this elective course, the student will be able to identify and apply specific knowledge and skills of common patient scenarios encountered in Vascular Interventional Nephrology.
Develop an understanding and application of the following procedures:
Vascular and Organ Ultrasound
Angiogram of dialysis vascular access
Angioplasty of dialysis vascular access
Thrombectomy of clotted dialysis access
Peritoneal dialysis catheter placement and salvage
Hemodialysis catheter placement: Acute and Chronic
Stent of the venous and arterial vasculature
