Biomedical Science, M.S. (CIP 26.0102)

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Biomedical Science is a two-year degree offered in each of the five basic science departments. It is designed to provide the background and laboratory skills to work as a laboratory scientist in biomedical research. The program of study provides a background in biomedical sciences though didactic course work in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics. Depending on the department and area of research, additional course work in physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, virology and cellular biology may be required. A written thesis is required that addressed a research area in the biomedical science that is based on the student’s original research.

The Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy offers a Clinical Anatomy track. This track is designed to fill the critical need for anatomy instructors at medical schools, other professional schools and undergraduate institutions. During the first year of the Program, M.S. students complete courses in embryology, histology and anatomy of the human musculoskeletal system, body cavities and nervous system, including labs and clinical correlations. During the second year, the students assist with these courses and complete a mentor-guided research project on a cellular, molecular and/or anatomical topic, culminating in a thesis. Thesis projects may be in a variety of scientific areas including basic science research.

Note:

The student will be required by his/her Department and advisory committee to supplement the core curriculum with additional courses that are required by specific departments.
