Combined Degree Program, M.D./Ph.D.


Requirements for The Combined MD and PHD Degrees Program


The combined M.D./Ph.D. program is an option for a limited number of students with superior academic records and strong research potential. In the course of the program, a student will pursue the medical school curriculum for first two years, spend three to four years in the Ph.D. program, and finally spend two years completing the medical curriculum.

Prospective students must first apply to and be accepted to the School of Medicine. They must then apply to and be accepted into the Ph.D. program in one of the basic science departments in the School of Graduate Studies. After being accepted into both programs, applicants must apply to and be accepted into the M.D./ Ph.D program through the M.D./Ph.D. Committee. Applicants should apply to medical school through AMCAS in the usual way and should state their desire to enter the M.D./Ph.D. program. Applicants should contact the Dean for the School of Graduate Studies for details about the other programs.

Minimal criteria for consideration of admission are: MCAT scores of 504; GPA 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) and GRE combined Verbal and Quantitative score of 300. The GRE is required. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 throughout the program. After the first two years of medical school, students must pass Step I of the USMLE before starting the Ph.D. program. When all the requirements for the Ph.D. program have been met, the student may begin the third year of medical school.

Financial support -

1. MS Year 1 and 2.  Current year Tuition and Non-Resident Fee is paid by the student.

2. MS Year 3: Current year Tuition and Non-Resident Fee is paid by the MD/PhD Program Waiver.  The MD/PhD students also receive reimbursement of Tuition and Non-Resident Fees paid in MS Year 1.

3. MS Year 4: Current year Tuition and Non-Resident Fee is paid by the MD/PhD Program Waiver.  Student also receives reimbursement of Tuition and Non-Resident Fee paid in Year 2.

Students begin the PhD curriculum after MS Year 2 and receive financial assistance from the Graduate Studies PhD Tuition and Non-Resident Fee Waiver program.  Students cannot receive the MD/PhD Program Waiver and The Graduate Studies Waiver during the same term.

If a student withdraws from either the M.D. or Ph.D. portion of the program the student is required to reimburse all tuition and fees paid or waived.
